First HD-DVDs hit the shelves |
Warner Bros. and Universal studios rolled out the first batch of high definition DVDs to U.S. store shelves, beating rival Blu-ray discs by a month.
HD-DVD versions of "The Last Saumurai," "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Serenity" were delivered to stores Tuesday, with "Million Dollar Baby" scheduled to hit shelves Thursday and Friday, Daily Variety reported Wednesday.
The first Toshiba DVD players went on sale Monday with an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 shipped to U.S. retailers. Users must have an HD-TV and an HD-DVD player to watch HD-DVD movies.
HD-DVD releases scheduled for May include "The Bourne Supremacy," "The Dukes of Hazzard," "Batman Begins" and "Constantine."
Blu-ray discs are scheduled to be in stores May 23, with the first players arriving June 25.
