Back to the Moon in 2008 |
By 2008, NASA intends to launch its first mission to the moon in more than three decades - an unmanned mission intended to gather information about materials on the moon, scientists said Monday.
The scientists said they had chosen a design from 19 proposals for the 73-million-dollar mission.
The mission will entail an impact from part of the vehicle, intended to kick up a plume of dust on a polar cap that can be examined by cameras on a craft flying over the impact sight.
The mission is a precursor to preparing for eventual human flight to Mars, NASA scientists said. They hope to find out whether there is enough water and oxygen on the moon to support human exploration and possibly provide fuel for further flight across the moon or even from the moon.
