American college girls' main obsession: diets |
More than 80% of college girls go on diets to control their weight, regardless of whether they are normal weight, overweight or obese, according to a study published in the March 31 online issue of Nutrition Journal.
When it comes to body image, there are a lot of internal and external pressures for young women in college that may be driving them to maybe not make the best decisions about dieting, said Brenda Malinauskas, who led the team of researchers from East Carolina University, USA.
The study was conducted on 185 college girls who were asked about their weight perception, dieting practices and physical activity.
The findings were that 83 percent of the girls reported trying to control their weight or having tried to control their weight. The survey also showed that 9 percent of college girls turn to smoking as a way to lose weight, and that 32 percent of them skip breakfast. The team found that only 19 percent of college girls exercise enough to promote weight loss.
While there were clearly some weight-loss strategies that shouldn't be used, not everything they were doing was bad, Malinauskas said. We just have to reinforce the good things.
It is appalling how young girls in this country, as young as 5 or 6, start worrying about dieting. We can't start young enough and we can't reinforce often enough the promotion of healthy eating and exercise habits.
