Winnie the Pooh is officially a star! |
The character from AA Milne’s books and numerous Disney animations has been awarded his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This comes as a part of an 18-month celebration for the bear’s 80th birthday.
Animated characters are an important part of the industry now, said Hollywood honorary mayor Johnny Grant. Some of the movies [the studios] are putting out don't do so well, but animated characters are doing great business.
Pooh, created in the 1920s by British author A.A. Miln, first appeared in a story called The Wrong Sort of Bees, published on December 24, 1925 in the London Evening News.
He made his cartoon character debut in the 1966 Disney animation Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree, and went on to star in dozens of films, specials and several cartoon series.
I know that Winnie would react to all this fanfare by simply saying 'Oh bother', said Robert Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Co. But, Winnie, you really are worth a bother.
Pooh is among about a dozen animated stars, including Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Snow White, to be awarded a star on the famed pavement. The famous honey-lover earned Disney $6-billion in retail sales in 2005, a figure beaten only by Mickey Mouse.
