Mercedes plans to release race cars to the public |
The Mercedes subsidiary AMG has announced plans to release several sports cars with stronger racing car characteristics including the new SLK 55 AMG Tracksport with an eight-cylinder engine producing 400 hp.
Speaking at a presentation in the Spanish town of Granada, AMG managing director Volker Mornhinweg said the cars would be built with lightweight materials and different specifications for the chassis, steering and brakes.
The start is being made with the SLK 55 AMG that includes a performance package with special light alloy wheels a CFK hardtop in silk mat and plastic rear window. Insulation material has been removed to reduce weight to less than 1,500 kilogrammes. It is fitted with a rollover cage, an 80-litre racing tank and fire extinguisher.
The Tracksport is based on the SLK 55 AMG Ultimate Experience Asia that was especially developed for lifestyle events surrounding the Formula 1 races in Asia.
Mornhinweg did not reveal what other "race car" models AMG is planning, but added that "obviously it makes more sense for the CLK than for the S-Class".
